Basque Elections (I)
Tomorrow, Basque Country will hold one of the most important elections of the latest years. As you could imagine, nothing is as reality shows. I'll explain first the political context in order to understand the campaign. Since the return of democracy to Spain the Basque nationalists have been increasing their demands and nowadays they have expressed clearly their objective: become a Nation-State, associated to Spain, and inside the EU. Besides, the terrorist separatist group ETA continues existing, although it has suffered several defeats: their political party is forbidden, its economy struggled and their main activists on jail. Besides, the 11M blasts have became Spanish society even more sensitive to terrorist attacks, so ETA has opted not to kill anyone since last year. In this situation, the current Basque president, Juan José Ibarretxe, from Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), had presented a plan for a new political status for Basque Country. This plan has been rejected by Spanish Congress. Ibarretxe is seeking to gain the majority at the elections in order to boost his plan.
